Krampus is a horned, demonic figure from Alpine folklore who punishes naughty children during the Christmas season, acting as a dark counterpart to St. Nicholas. Originating from pre-Christian pagan traditions, the Krampus legend was later integrated into Christian folklore, where he is said to carry bad children away in a basket on Krampusnacht, the night before St. Nicholas Day.
